Thoughts on Group Presentations
Dear Journal, my first assignment for my speech class was to work in groups and we all each had to read a chapter and put in our parts for this assignment. Coming into this class I didn’t know what to expect but I am a class leader. And what I had to do for this assignment was Write an intro and Conclusion. So, what I did was read a bit of my chapter and wrote about my group's leadership and their roles. My experience through this presentation was once my teammates finished their parts I skimmed through everyone’s work and wrote out my conclusions putting the final words all together. What I thought about my Group. Which presented first, my group did an amazing job! and some of their examples were explained very well. The way they didn’t put too many words on the slides they elaborated more than just read off the screen. Group leadership and problem-solving are used in everyday life. Leadership and problem-solving go hand in hand, as a leader helps guide the group toward a solution by fostering open communication, encouraging creativity, and promoting teamwork. Together, innovative solutions. This was my favorite presentation because it reminded me of the military. Being a group leader in the military involves taking on additional responsibilities and leading a team. It requires strong leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and the ability to motivate and guide others. Group leaders play a crucial role in ensuring the success and cohesion of their unit. In the military, group leaders are often responsible for problem-solving within their teams. They need to identify issues, develop effective solutions, and implement them to overcome challenges. This can involve analyzing situations, coordinating resources, and making quick decisions under pressure. It's a crucial skill that helps maintain efficiency and effectiveness in military operations. I think that's what really pushed me to be a class leader knowing i have the plan to join the military. And i would like to learn a few things in this class to take to the military. To help me become a sergeant one day. Now the second group that was up was group one and the chapter they went over was about Intercultural Communication. They first started speaking about how many cultures have their own culture. They explained ideal values and real values. Ideal values a member of a society they hold and follow. While real values a member of society holds and follows. They even went in-depth on sexual orientation they mentioned that the dominant American culture has traditionally favored and privileged heterosexuality leading to severe mistreatment of those who deviate from the storm. This presentation was quite different from my group (group 3) they included videos and even TikTok’s. I’ve never seen this in a presentation which I found different from other projects, even presentations. We are all so used to putting words and pictures on a slide and then just really going deeper and even finding real-life videos or reels. I would've liked to see fewer words on the slides. In my opinion i feel that defeats the point, especially in a speech class. But we are not used to just talking right off the top of our heads. Next time they can try fewer words and videos and just interact with the class with the way they speak. Using it as a practice method to get used to not just speaking from slides. Overall fantastic work for the first group. I did like the creativity in the slides they had so many colors and so many beautiful pictures. It is so amazing how the difference between these two projects I have seen so far. Group 2 didn't present on the same day as Group 3 and Group 1. I believe they were going to present this coming Wednesday. Today is Wednesday, May 15, group 2 just presented, and they did an amazing job with their presentation. They spoke about Communication in groups and what defines and makes a group. They break down what groups are and what makes them. Even interest groups and health groups. They spoke about social and supportive groups which are caring, Encouragement, and trust. While Supportive is Feedback and Subsistence I didn't know that until today. So that was amazing that I got to learn something new from my classmates. I think they did a great presentation, but I feel as if this group didn't work as a group together you could tell that they combined their slides to make one. Which threw me off just a little bit. I did like how they related to the topic they were speaking about in their lives. I Remember one student saying he is in criminal justice, and this is, etc. Also, a dancer used a dance example for our understanding. Some slides were a lot of words than pictures. This takes me back to once again we all are so used to typing what we are going to say on a slide rather than just really going inept on our own. But I can say some of them did go inept into the topics they were explaining which was done well. What I also found so interesting about all these three presentations was not only the way they presentation Looked like. But also, how they presented their presentation. Some of them went into debt, and we're going even deeper using world-life examples in their lives. To understand what they were talking about. Every person is unique in their way and in my opinion, I truly feel that everyone did a fantastic job in their own way. I truly felt as if I learned so much information that I didn't know before. What I also found so incredible about this was that we were learning so many new pieces of information, not just from a teacher or a professor. We were learning from our peers, and they took their time to research and to prepare this presentation to explain to us. The many different topics that we learned. What I can say is that This was a learning process, of how to present and speak to one another.
Great journal writing. Thanks for sharing your journal with me!!
